The current ATLAS detector has shown a remarkable performace during the past years of data taking. However, to fully exploit the physics capabilities provided by the LHC, several upgrades are planned for the long shutdown period in 2018, called Phase-I upgrade. These include improvements of the ATLAS trigger system by increasing the calorimeter granularity and introducing new muon trigger and tracking detectors in the forward direction. Freiburg is responsible in several areas of the integration of the new detectors: we build and calibrate the optical alignment system for the trigger and tracking detectors, we are contributing to the precise positioning of the detectors within the small wheel, we are responsible for the design and construction of the leak-less water cooling system of all electronics components and for the different high voltage supply systems in the New Small Wheel.

Beyond that a luminosity upgrade of the LHC to the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) is planned for 2024-2026. Aiming at a tenfold increase in instantaneous luminosity, the HL-LHC is foreseen to collect about 3500 fb^-1 during the envisaged 10 years of data-taking. To cope with the unprecedented track density and radiation levels, the ATLAS experiment will replace its entire tracking system with an all silicon inner tracker, called „ITk“. The ITk layout consits of a pixel detector for the inner layers surrounded by silicon strip layers in the outer regions. The University of Freiburg is heavily involved in the prototyping and design programme of the strip detector, with a focus of the end-caps. In this talk an overview on the current prototyping programme including the various testing of sensors, hybrids and full modules is given.
