Abstract: 

In High Energy Physics experiments performed at CERN, engineers and physicists are working within international collaborations to develop different kinds of detectors. As in some of the experiments, the particle track density and the radiation dose are very high, a high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) is necessary for the detectors. Due to the large capacitance of long strip detectors, they are not optimally suited for this application. Therefore pixelated detectors were developed, where each pixel indicates itself a registered event. One family of such pixelated detectors developed at CERN are called Medipix and Timepix detectors.

The Medipix and Timepix detectors are hybrid pixel detectors consisting of a pixelated photon processing ASIC and a sensor layer from Si, GaAs, CdTe or other semiconductor materials. The hybrid pixel detector concept has proven to be a great success because of independent improvement of the detector ASIC and the sensor layer by experts in their corresponding fields.

Sometimes it happens that the efforts in the development of advanced technology lead to unforeseen applications in the public sector. This is the case for hybrid pixel detectors. The Medipix and Timepix detectors are in use now for X- and Gamma-ray imaging in various research fields like non-destructive testing, material sciences, nuclear radiation monitoring and biological imaging. Also for medical imaging, such photon processing detectors open new opportunities due to their advanced information like photon energy for each registered event and subpixel spatial resolution.

The challenges of using Medipix and Timepix detectors will be presented here as well as their great benefits for various research fields.
