Susanne Reffert - What is string theory?
RTG Seminar on Wednesday, January 31, 2018
Abstract:
The basic idea of string theory is very simple: we assume elementary particles to be one-dimensional entities instead of point particles. This idea has a multitude of consequences. New degrees of freedom and with them, new symmetries appear. String Theory also admits higher-dimensional objects, so-called branes. While its direct detection is out of reach to due the energy scales involved, String Theory is a useful calculational tool with which we can access gauge theory in a unified way.
