Achim Stahl - Measuring the Electric Dipole Moment of Protons
RTG Seminar on May 22nd, 2019
Abstract
Driven by the quest to understand the disappearance of the antimatter from the universe, particle physicist are looking for new sources of violation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in various directions. CP-violation implied by strong interactions might manifest itself in electric dipole moments (EDM) of elementary particles. Today the searches for EDMs of neutrons provide the most stringent limits on strong CP-violation. In my talk I will present a new idea to measure EDMs of protons. I will introduce the measurement with an electrostatic storage ring and argue that this measurement will surpass the sensitivity of the measurements on the neutron. I will describe some of the technological challenges and explain the roadmap towards such a measurement.
