Ilaria Brivio - The Standard Model Effective Field Theory in a nutshell

There are two main ways to probe physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC: either directly, looking for new resonances, or indirectly, trying to identify deviations from the SM predictions. The power of indirect searches will grow significantly in the next decades, thanks to the huge amount of data to be collected in the upcoming LHC runs. The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) is one of the best theoretical frameworks for organizing and interpreting these searches. In fact, interest in this theory has grown considerably in the last few years, leading to significant developments both in theoretical and experimental directions. After revising briefly the main elements of the Standard Model, the lecture will present some aspects of the construction of the SMEFT and discuss its main properties. Some applications will be illustrated with practical examples.
